Our Story
The Ice Cream Smuggler has been serving homemade ice cream on Cape Cod since 1979, with a focus on simple, high-quality flavors made in small batches. Over the years, the shop’s recipes and approach have made it a local favorite. In 2005, longtime owners Alan and Maggi Tyson sold the business to family friends Paul and Carter Catalano, who were trained in the original recipes and continued using the same methods. During the Catalanos’ ownership, Angela—now the new owner—worked at the shop as a longtime employee and scooper, getting to know the recipes, the regulars, and the day-to-day rhythm of the Smuggler. While the menu expanded over the years, the core of the shop remained the same: classic, homemade ice cream made fresh with quality ingredients.
Today, The Ice Cream Smuggler is owned by Angela and Chris, who met while in school at the University of Oklahoma before returning to Cape Cod to raise their family. With two young sons who are proudly Ice Cream Smuggler obsessed, they love being part of a place that so many families and locals have grown up with. For Angela, coming back as an owner is especially meaningful. After years of scooping behind the counter, she now gets to carry on the shop’s traditions and help shape its future. Together, they are committed to keeping the Smuggler true to its roots, continuing to make ice cream in small batches with quality ingredients, and keeping the shop a welcoming spot for generations of customers to enjoy.
